Job description, responsibilities and duties

We at Sudolabs are helping startups all over the world to pursue their dreams and drive digital innovations of their businesses. With a large number of greatly successful customers, our team is rapidly growing. We would like to provide our engineers with the best care, guidance, and mentorship, hence we opened positions for engineering managers to join our company.

The role of the engineering manager is to deliver value to the project (as a developer or tech lead) at the horizontal alignment and to coach, lead people individually and create or improve engineering department processes and practices at the vertical alignment (across the company).

Who are we looking for?

- An engineer who would like to move forward, use well-earned experience, and help colleagues to develop their skills and support progress through their careers.
- A team leader who would like to guide people more than guide a project and wants to help them to reach their goals.
- A project manager who strives for change, be closer to the people, and be a part of an open-minded environment.

As an Engineering Manager, we expect you to:

- Deliver work as a software engineer with responsibility for an architecture design, feature implementation, and code review on the seniority level of Senior Engineer or higher.
- Provide supervision and guidance to other engineers, manage their career development, perform and evaluate performance reviews.
- Be a mentor and coach, talk to people on regular basis to better understand their situation and help them do their best work.
- Work closely with HR to retain and hire new talent.
- Actively work with the department leadership and other managers to align everyone on the same goals and values.
- Actively promote a culture of lifelong learning and create opportunities for knowledge sharing.
- Actively seek improvements of our processes, practices and always think about improving our work environment.
- Promote effective communication in the organisation by eliminating blockers, creating clarity, resolving conflicts, strengthening relationships, and promoting sympathy and understanding.
- Give everyone enough space to grow and avoid micro-management as much as possible.

What should you have?

- relevant experience as a senior engineer (ideal tech stack is JavaScript, React, NodeJS);
- open, transparent, and effective communication in verbal and written form;
- ability to explain complex organisational or technical topics;
- ability to give a constructive and valuable feedback;
- be able to take responsibility for critical decisions;
- ability to delegate work effectively in order to achieve department and company goals;
- problem-solving skills to address any issues that come up;
- influence and conflict management capabilities;
- empathy to develop a better understanding of your counterparts;
- self-awareness to summon the patience to manage complex issues;
- organisational skills for keeping track of multiple moving parts;
- it is nice to have experience of leading own team as a team leader or a project manager.

Our expectations after one month:

- Onboard on the assigned project and become an active team member in terms of software development;
- Get familiar with company processes and practices.

Our expectations after three months:

- Fully active team member on the project;
- Initiate mentorship discussions and 1 on 1 session with one or two colleagues, get to know each other, review and plan their future career goals and manage expectations;
- Excellent and prosperous relationships with all the colleagues, especially with your direct reports;
- Be an active member of the engineering management working group. Actively contribute to the discussions and work on improving the work environment and engineering culture.

Our expectations after six months:

- Lead at least one initiative for importing our work environment or engineering culture;
- Managed group of engineers should contain up to five engineers;
- Fully support your direct reports (regular 1 on 1 meeting and feedback, clear career goals set, a few performance reviews already performed and prepared to do to next ones);
- Regularly participate in the hiring process as a hiring manager.
