The purpose of the Data Team is to build the future of insurance through brilliance with data. In particular, we will enable company to make better decisions and achieve operational excellence, driving market leading expense and loss ratios. We are building the company Data Universe which will give us all the benefits of both a Data Lake and a Data Warehouse, without the drawbacks of either, and need a talented, tenacious and creative data engineer who is comfortable using functional programming languages to solve challenging problems.
Your tasks:
• Building end-to-end technological solutions allowing a range of different stakeholders to access the functionality provided by the data universe:
• Optimize code towards performance and stability
• Integrate, consolidate, cleanse data and structure it for use in analytics applications
• Enable production ready data transforms
• Monitoring of data streams and pipelines with the help of automated tests
• Keep up to date on the latest technological developments and advise the wider team and organisation on these developments as necessary
• Work within the constraints set down by the wider technological environment, led by the Data & Technology team

Requirements for the employee

English - Upper intermediate (B2)
Experience in the position/sector
At least 1 year of experience in functional programming, data transformations, and data warehousing
Personality requirements and skills
• Strong SCALA experience (minimum 3 years) or Proven Functional Programming experience (for example one of CLOJURE, ERLANG, SCALA and F#) and a Science, Technological, Engineering or Mathematics degree or
• No SCALA / Functional Programming experience but an outstanding higher degree in Mathematics (masters or above)
• Knowledge of data transformation pipelines and tools
• Experience in a fast-moving environment, working within context and constraints of a wider organisational development framework
• Experience developing end-to-end solutions that meet the needs of multiple different stakeholders
• Understanding of Agile & Extreme programming practices (TDD, KISS, YAGNI)
Nice to have:
• At least 1 year of experience in functional programming
• Innovative with an ability to adapt quickly to new technologies; (e.g., Apache Spark)
• Excellent ability to integrate a range of different systems together, building APIs and/or other mechanisms
• Understanding of NLP & document processing
• Experience using LINUX and command languages (BASH)
• Good knowledge of AWS services
• Good communication skills, in particular, able to understand and communicate complex technical issues clearly to a non-technical audience
• Ability to work as part of a non-hierarchical, dynamic team
• Experience in the commercial insurance industry would be beneficial
• No SCALA / Functional Programming experience but an outstanding higher degree in Mathematics (masters or above)
• Knowledge of data transformation pipelines and tools
• Experience in a fast-moving environment, working within context and constraints of a wider organisational development framework
• Experience developing end-to-end solutions that meet the needs of multiple different stakeholders
