Job description, responsibilities and duties

The CMMI Manager leads and matures the organization’s CMMI program within a software development environment. This role ensures engineering processes align with CMMI standards, strengthens SDLC discipline, drives continuous improvement, and supports high‑quality software delivery. The position is central to maintaining certifications, optimizing development workflows, and enabling predictable, scalable software execution.


Core Responsibilities

  • CMMI Program Leadership — Manage and evolve the organization’s CMMI framework for software development, ensuring alignment with CMMI‑DEV practices and engineering best‑in‑class standards.
  • Software Process Improvement — Analyze SDLC workflows, identify bottlenecks, and implement improvements across requirements, design, coding, testing, release, and maintenance processes.
  • SDLC Governance — Establish and enforce process controls across Agile, hybrid, or waterfall development models to ensure consistency, predictability, and compliance.
  • Quality Management System — Maintain a QMS tailored to software engineering, including configuration management, defect tracking, change control, and verification/validation processes.
  • DevOps & Toolchain Alignment — Collaborate with DevOps teams to ensure CI/CD pipelines, automation, and release processes align with CMMI expectations.
  • Training & Coaching — Train engineering teams on CMMI practices, SDLC standards, documentation expectations, and quality processes.
  • Documentation & Reporting — Maintain engineering process documentation, audit evidence, metrics dashboards, and compliance reports.
  • Certification & Audits — Lead internal audits, prepare development teams for SCAMPI appraisals, and ensure ongoing certification readiness.
  • Cross‑Functional Collaboration — Work closely with engineering, product, DevOps, QA, and PMO teams to ensure processes support business and technical goals.
  • Proposal & Technical Volume Support — Provide CMMI‑aligned process inputs for software‑related proposals, especially in government or regulated environments.
  • Engineering Relationship Management — Serve as the bridge between Quality Management and software development teams, ensuring alignment and adoption.

  • CMMI Expertise — Strong understanding of CMMI‑DEV, appraisal methods, and engineering‑focused process areas.
  • Software Development Knowledge — Familiarity with SDLC phases, Agile methodologies, DevOps practices, and modern engineering workflows.
  • Quality Management — Experience implementing quality frameworks within software teams.
  • Process Improvement — Skilled in analyzing engineering processes, defining KPIs, and driving measurable improvements.
  • Auditing Experience — Experience conducting audits in software environments, including code quality, configuration management, and release processes.
  • Training & Communication — Ability to coach technical teams and communicate process expectations clearly.
  • Project & Engineering Management — Understanding of Agile, Scrum, Kanban, and traditional project management.
  • Technical Proficiency — Strong skills in documentation tools, SDLC platforms (Jira, Azure DevOps), and reporting tools.
  • Certifications — CMMI Practitioner, Lead Appraiser training, or QA/Process certifications preferred.
  • Government Contracting Knowledge
