Job description, responsibilities and duties

Job overview
The Business Analyst ensures the liaison between the business side and the IT side of an IT project. The Business Analyst is knowledgeable in the business and in the applications of his area and bridges both. The Business Analyst is responsible for the analysis and all related documentation for his allocated IT projects. The Business Analyst defines how the scope of the IT project will be implemented within the existing applications, working closely with the software development team. His role includes establishing and maintaining strong regional relations for knowledge sharing and activities to achieve synergy with other BAs in the region, as well as with business units and regional/group teams.

Responsibilities and duties
Customer relationship management, collaboration and teamwork
• Bridges business and IT solutions, manages business relations with stakeholders (including key users, lab managers, and business unit managers) on IT initiatives to ensure successful implementation.
• Lead deployment of Group IT Solutions.
• Ensures the delivery of meaningful and relevant business information to business leaders.
• Travels to laboratories in the region upon request or if necessary.
• Establishes and maintains strong regional relations for knowledge sharing and activities to achieve synergy with other BAs and development teams.

Project coordination
• Manages and tracks the status of requirements throughout the project lifecycle; enforces and redefines as necessary.
• Communicates changes, enhancements, and modifications of business requirements — verbally or through written documentation — to customers and the project team so that issues and solutions are understood.
• Manages changes to the project scope, project schedule, and project.
• Coordinate developers to build and implement technology solutions.
• Monitors project progress, recommends actions.

Requirement management
• Elicits, analyses, specifies, and validates the business needs of customers or end users, ensuring technical feasibility.
• Identifies requirements by establishing personal rapport with customers and with other persons in a position to understand service requirements.
• Conducts interviews to gather business requirements via workshops, questionnaires, surveys, site visits, workflow storyboards, use cases, scenarios, and other methods.
• Helps in defining the value each business requirement represents for the business, thus prioritizing the collected requirements.
• Analyses business requirements and addresses any relevant problems.
• Assists with the interpretation of business requirements into feasible options and communicates these back to the customers.
• Analyses and verifies requirements for completeness, consistency, comprehensibility, feasibility, and conformity to standards.

Specification
• Collaborates with the team leader and development team to determine project scope and vision, by defining project impact, outcome criteria, and metrics.
• Translates conceptual business requirements into functional requirements or user stories in a clear manner that is comprehensible to developers/project team.
• Creates process models, specifications, diagrams, and charts to provide direction to the project team, writing functional specifications.
• Develops and conduct peer reviews of the business requirements to ensure that requirement specifications are correctly interpreted and understood by the project team.

Configuration, development
• Delivers simple solutions, by creating ad hoc SQL queries, calculations, changing the layout of simple reports.
• Participates in software configuration tasks, maintains data dictionaries.
• Mange data collection and migration to new IT solutions

Testing, validation, documentation
• Verifies the developed functionalities against the acceptance criteria of the requirements (user stories).
• Creates the test scenarios used for user acceptance testing.
• Validates changes and new features by performing IT testing.
• Assists the customers in performing user acceptance testing.
• Ensures/facilitates audits and review of the use of new systems to ensure the implementation of the best practices.
• Writes and updates user documentation, policies, and procedures.

Training, mentoring
• Trains customers and end-users on the new systems and provides support.
• Provides low level on-site support and is the contact for central IT Infra teams.
• Provides guidance and/or instruction to junior team members.

Management reporting
• Provides information for the team leader by preparing reports and analyses; answering questions and requests.
• Escalates problems when they cannot be solved in the team.

Personal accomplishments
• Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; benchmarking state-of-the-art practices; participating in professional societies.

Experience:
• Proven experience with business and technical requirements analysis, elicitation, modelling, verification, and methodology development.
• Experience aligning IT with business initiatives.
• Experience in project coordination and project management.
• Proficiency in the appropriate software (Laboratory Information Management Systems – LIMS) for the position.
• Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
