Functional objectives:

The Assistant Controller (Lead Business Unit) is to support the Controller LBU & Procurement for all financial activities, processes and internal controls related to the Lead Business Unit and the Clarios Recycling Entity. The role will be based in our EMEA HQ Office in Hannover, Germany.

LBU activities include:

  • Procurement of LME lead & alloys, 3rd party recycling center tolling, open market scrap battery purchases, and customer core collections.

  • Intercompany sale of lead & alloys to EMEA battery production facilities.

  • Management, control and valuation of LBU lead, scrap and other inventories in line with US GAAP FIFO accounting.

  • Coordination with and ownership for the financial reporting of the lead recycling center in Krautscheid.

  • Coordinate with Corporate Tax & CFS, PS Trade Compliance, and local Country Controllers to ensure Recycling complies with legal & statutory requirements, especially related to scrap battery purchases.

Key responsibilities:

Business Partnership and Business Support:

  • Cooperate with the Director Lead Procurement and the LBU team to support strategic initiatives and to improve actual financial results consistent with operating plan commitments.

  • Team with the Lead procurement organization to develop and implement a plan to improve purchasing processes and controls to a Clarios best-in-class level.

  • Provide financial analysis and support to the Lead Procurement Team during visits and negotiations with key suppliers

  • Collaborate with the Clarios Battery Plant and Central Ops Finance teams to develop best in practice intercompany processes to ensure accuracy, speed and control of LBU lead sales

Financial Process and Fiduciary Responsibilities:

  • Support and execute LBU month end close and regular planning/forecasting processes per the allocation provided by LBU & Procurement Controller. Ensure adequate execution of controls over the P&L and B/S captions in LBU.

  • Provide the business leader with meaningful variance analysis to guide improvement actions

  • Support Controller in providing financial and KPI reporting in Plan, Forecasts and actuals for the Accounts Payable and Inventory accounts;

  • Support implementation and ensure the maintenance of a sufficient internal control environment to ensure accuracy of Clarios Recycling’s Financial Statements and that they comply with Sarbanes Oxley and other requirements. 

  • Collaborate with the Bratislava Business Centre to ensure Clarios Procurement processes are in place and optimized to support the Procurement acquisition activities

  • Coordinate with Corporate Tax & CFS, Trade Compliance, and local Country Controllers to ensure Clarios complies with legal & statutory requirements for the Clarios Recycling business, especially related to scrap battery purchases

  • Identify best business practices and facilitate the propagation of these practices throughout the business unit and participate in the sharing of financial best business practices across the organization.

  • Assure the integrity, accuracy, and completeness of the organization’s records and ensure that financial statements are presented on a timely basis as required by Clarios, and ensure to work closely with the other EMEA teams and the BBC to understand their impact on the financials of the Procurement team.

Education and professional knowledge:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or equivalent

  • 5+ years of international operations/supply chain and/or P&L experience in multinational, matrix driven organization with a high regard for results-driven growth and profitability (preferable in U.S. company). Successful experience as a divisional financial leader

  • Proven interpersonal skills with a collegial, team-oriented style.

  • Excellent business and analytical skills with a high degree of intelligence and creativity

  • Effective technical financial skills, balanced with sound business judgment. The ability to balance financial and operational factors and to analyze complex business problems and develop appropriate solutions in a timely and responsive manner. 

  • Experience implementing new systems/change programs into a large, complex business.

  • Experience managing global compliance (SOX and internal controls)

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as strong presentation skills

  • The maturity, judgment, confidence and presence needed to establish rapport and credibility with management, customers, suppliers and other key business partners. 

  • Forward thinking with a willingness to engage in all aspects of the business as well as flexibility and openness to changes

  • Cross cultural awareness

  • Fluent in English, German language skills optional

  • Willingness to travel globally as required up to 20% of the time
