Job description, responsibilities and duties

In a team of highly motivated and experienced engineers who cover a broad range of products and services that are offered to internal clients we are looking for a Microsoft SQL Server/BI specialist.

The Microsoft SQL Server engineering team provides platform engineering and life-cycle management for MS SQL Server and MSBI platforms in Swiss Re globally, offering to our clients stable, well-performing, highly available, secure, sustainable and nicely scaling database, reporting and business intelligence services. As part of this team the respective MS SQL Server engineer (position holder) acts as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the Microsoft SQL Server and MSBI Technology stack. (S)he is responsible for architecting and engineering the MS SQL Server and MSBI platform, for further development and optimization of the two platforms, and for needed life-cycle management actions on the MSBI platform. The engineer will ensure properly designed/devised setup and configurations of respective SQL Server and MSBI installations to meet the requirements of all our clients. (S)he signs mutually accountable for stability and availability of the platform, in close collaboration with the operations team. Automation and optimizations, deployment improvements and integrations will be at the core of his/her contribution (agile development, CI/CD, DevOps). The SQL Server & MSBI engineer will define and implement automation and monitoring concepts, processes and solutions, allowing for proactive management of the platform and ensuring healthy and stable system/platform, and give needed guidance and support for issue handling (incident escalation point, consulting in problem management) to colleagues in Operations. Keeping with standards and best practices, both, market and company-set, ensuring high security and following/integrating and keeping with tight governance will be another area of focus. (S)he will be in direct contact with clients to support them in tackling and solving issues they encounter that cannot be solved by 1st and 2nd level support, providing complex problem analysis, troubleshooting and professional consultancy to clients.

Furthermore, the engineer will be involved in promoting MS SQL Server and Microsoft BI platform within Swiss Re, and will be contributing to defining the architecture, the concepts and design elements for both platforms, and to their implementation in close cooperation with the operations team and with providers, to deliver a constantly improving, cost efficient and highly available platform.

Besides close collaboration in core team as well as a committed cooperation with near-shore operations teams, clearly a close and committed cooperation with other teams (such as Application Teams, Windows Architecture and Engineering, Storage, Information Security etc.) is vital and required for success in this role.

The Microsoft SQL Server and BI engineering role is in a team within IT GTM CETO (IT Group Technology Management Cloud, Engineering, Technology, Operations) organization. It is part of the IPR (Information Processing & Reporting) unit. Engineer will be part of an engaged, diverse, and welcoming team where everyone is willing to help one another out to ensure we deliver excellent service to our customers.

Core Responsibilities:
• Be (in team) responsible for Architecture, Design and Engineering of the Microsoft SQL and MSBI platform
• Devise a stable, highly available, secure, scalable, performing, maintainable/sustainable, cost-efficient and standards-compliant database and BI platform offered to clients
• Help drive the delivery of public cloud solutions for customers within the limitations of auditing and security compliance with the core team
• Create concepts and make design decisions for new solutions in Microsoft SQL Server and MSBI scope
• Lead and implement life-cycle activities and operations for the platforms and all pertaining components and tools (new versions and releases, fade-out and decommissioning of old versions)
• Direct and actively contribute to the provision of, maintenance of, integration of and continuous improvement of the Microsoft SQL Server and BI platforms based on stakeholder requirements
• Ensure quality documentation on all levels (architecture, design, implementation, operation, maintenance)
• Strive for efficiency and cost improvements
• Actively contribute to design and development of the two platforms (MS SQL Server, MSBI) and to their services offered to clients
• Provide integrations with various other platforms, including Cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, etc.)
• Define and drive monitoring, automation and self-service initiatives, design and improve (operational) processes
• Analyze performance and optimize resource usage
• Provide deployment facilities that are apt for agile and DevOps procedures and integration
• Closely work together with clients and neighboring teams, providing consultancy and support on SQL Server and MSBI matters

Technical Skills:

Must have:
• Expert knowledge of the Microsoft SQL Server and BI (SSAS, SSRS, SSIS, PowerBI) technology stack in an end to end perspective
• Deep knowledge of database/DBMS and BI concepts, architecture, engineering, implementation, usage and operations
• Excellent understanding of MSSQL stack from end to end including database & DBMS design and implementation, MSSQL concepts, architecture and engineering
• 6+ years' experience in Microsoft SQL Server and/or MSBI technologies
• Sound understanding of Microsoft Azure offerings (Logic Apps, Data Factory, Azure Database, PowerBI, etc.)
• Ability to quickly grasp new ideas and assimilate knowledge of new technologies and IT trends
• Methodical and systematic approach towards gathering requirements, designing solutions, documentation and communication
• Sound understanding of Kerberos delegation and Windows claims authentication.

Nice to have:
• Good understanding of alternative database platforms (Oracle, Postgres, MongoDB and similar)
• Experience in one or more automation and provisioning tools is an advantage (PowerShell, DSC, Puppet, Ansible, Terraform, etc.)
• Deeply experienced in scripting, extensive programming/developer experience a big plus (PowerShell, Puppet, C#, DotNET Core, GO)
• Good knowledge of Microsoft Windows platform
• Good understanding of wider infrastructure components such as network and storage
• Experience this documentation on Wiki and DevOps tools is a plus (Confluence, JIRA, Azure DevOps, Visio)
• Experience working with API endpoints for cross infrastructure request automation (Azure, AWS, any web API)
