Job description, responsibilities and duties

The Information Analytics Service unit supports Swiss Re's business functions in generating insight from structured and unstructured data for their business and strategic initiatives (e.g., Big Data & Smart Analytics and growth programs). A team of professionals in text, data and visual analytics provide services in three key areas:
• Analytics Consulting
Defining the business question to be answered with appropriate analytics models
• Analytics Modelling & Prototyping
Validating analytics scenarios by means of functional prototypes or pilot solutions
• Analytics Engineering
Implementing analytics solutions to solve business issues and scale its usage
To extend the existing Analytics Team we are seeking a Data Scientist who will contribute in accelerating the deployment and improvement of Analytical Services in tight cooperation with peers, internal experts and business clients. In particular, the role will involve:
• Generating business insight using data analytics and information visualisation methods to answer business problems in different (Re-) Insurance domains.
• Designing and developing analytics solutions to move towards data-driven innovation in alignment with business priorities and key targets.
• Driving enhancements of analytics products and services to improve business value and service quality according to business needs and industry best practices.
The ideal candidate has a background in computer science/engineering, computational linguistics or information science and possesses working experience in at least one (and ideally a combination) of the following domains: data & text mining, machine learning and information visualisation.

Key Tasks
• Apply analytical methods and algorithms to build data products that streamline the process from data collection to insight generation.
• Validate, interpret and present data findings to both an expert and non-expert audience in tight collaboration with analytics consultants
• Standardise analytical processes and workflows to streamline service provision as well as further develop Swiss Re's Analytics Suite.
• Contribute in an agile team of data scientists to develop and deploy data-driven solutions for various Insurance and Reinsurance business problems (i.e., ad-hoc analysis request as well as business projects).
• Foster new data-driven approaches to generate business insight in order to address unanswered business problems in a proactive way.
• Build-up sustainable relationship with key business and IT stakeholders to become a trusted partner for the field of data analytics.

Personality requirements and skills

Essentials
• Bachelor's degree/Master Study (completed or near completion) in computer science, computational linguistics or information science (or equivalent)
• Knowledge and experience in the area of information retrieval, natural language processing, data analytics and information visualisation.
• Sound analytical & conceptual skills to understand key business needs and apply existing and novel analytics solutions to solve specific business problems.
• Basic knowledge in a combination of analytic, scripting and visualisation tools for the integrated analysis of transactional, text, speech and behavioural data.
• Basic experience with statistical computing languages such as R, Matlab, SAS, SPSS.
• Knowledgeable in at least one programming language such as Python, Java.
• Experience in relational databases/SQL
• Excellent verbal and written English skills, ideally multi-lingual.
