Zurich is seeking an experienced Big Data Developer to join our Data & Analytics team as part of Global Corporate IT’s Major Projects organization.

The right candidate will join a small team of highly qualified and experienced professionals, working on true Big Data projects with a direct impact on the success of Zurich’s frontline business.

As part of a team, you will be responsible to code the acquisition and integration of data from a variety of data sources to support our global initiatives. For this you will work closely with a team of experts to develop the most optimal algorithms combining the data and unlocking its value.

Your Role:
As an Data Acquisition and Integration Developer your main responsibilities will involve:
• Develop and maintain data integration pipelines, customizations to the Palantir/Hadoop based platform and entirely new services as part of your regular work, applying solid statistical knowledge in the process.
• Independently solve complex data integration challenges, by understanding and synthesizing the requirements from Subject Matter Experts, Business Analysts, and Data Scientists. Subsequently propose and implement solution algorithms addressing the challenge.
• Analyze and troubleshoot problems associated with distributed data processing pipelines (as might occur from coding, or inefficient use of processing and storage resources).
• Maintain and develop required documentation for technical support, development, and increasing the understanding of the current environment.
• Adequately quality assure own deliverables and supports System and Integration Tests
• Understand customers’ objectives, processes, and products in order to make educated recommendations.
• Work closely with peers to ensure continuous improvement of code and processes within the team.
• Work with colleagues across the IT function to ensure plans and policies are aligned.
• Support management by assessing software or components for new opportunities (where possible through re-use), by performing preliminary evaluation of software and components, and by coming forward with recommendations for management to develop and improve IT processes and systems.
• Support management in building the Business Case, including cost / benefit analysis, risk assessment, project scope, and development of a high level plan.
• Act within a number of complex processes and procedures in an international environment, and use in-depth knowledge to solve internal customer issues or escalate appropriately to manager, internal partners or external vendors

Personality requirements and skills

• Demonstrated strength in Mathematics and Statistics (such as a BA/BS in Mathematics or Statistics is a plus
• Strong Java/Groovy Team Programming Experience
• Has experience as developer on Linux/Unix based systems.
• Development experience with Hadoop ecosystem components for data processing
• Good understanding and experience of distributed data processing
• Good understanding of relational database structure and performance aspects of RDBMS’
• Good interpersonal skills as team member as well as towards internal customers.
• Good theoretical and/or practical knowledge about application of statistical methods is an advantage.
• Experience with machine learning a plus.
• Able to cope with ambiguity
