Job description, responsibilities and duties
The U.S. Embassy in Bratislava is seeking candidates for the permanent full time position of Economic Specialist in Political-Economic Section.
Incumbent covers a full range of economic reporting and analytical duties as one of two professional-level economic specialists in the political/economic section.
Provides expert policy advice and analysis to the political/economic section, commercial officer and Mission leadership on macroeconomic, financial, banking, entrepreneurship, and trade issues, and tracks political implications of economic developments. Fosters relationships and initiates activities with the Slovak government, private sector, academic and NGO experts in these areas to promote U.S. interests. Researches and composes analytical and spot reports on Slovak economic issues affecting U.S. interests. Identifies and manages public outreach activities to promote U.S. State Department goals.
Assists and advises potential American investors on issues affecting foreign investment. Primary backup for Energy/Environment, Science, Technology & Health Specialist, and backs up other Specialists in the section, so must stay apprised of overall political and economic developments.

1. Education:
Completion of university studies (MA) in economics, finance, business administration, public policy or other related field.
2. Prior Work Experience:
Minimum four years’ experience in economic research and analysis, or related experience in economic journalism.
3. Language Proficiency:
English – level IV (fluent), both written and spoken, incumbent must know technical economic terminology in order to be able to do complex economic translations and interpretation.
Slovak – level IV (fluent), both written and spoken.
4. Skills and Abilities:
Research and write clear, concise factual and analytical reports. Ability to develop and maintain full range of contacts (from advisory/expert level contacts up to senior/high level contacts) so he/she can gather the most current data or verify any information provided. Actively employ his/her own judgment and experience to utilize information to provide strategic advice and recommendations to American officers and Mission management. Compiles statistical data on macroeconomic indicators such as GDP, state budget, monetary policy, foreign investment, trade balance, unemployment, and inflation in an Excel format, and produces related graphics
