The Senior Risk Engineer Casualty Reinsurance is primarily responsible for risk and exposure assessment for the Energy (Refineries, Petrochemical, Pipeline), Chemical industry, Power-generation/ Utilities and related Equipment and Machinery. The Risk Engineer will identify and analyse existing and emerging risks in the Energy/ Chemical industry and contribute to the development of related reinsurance underwriting and portfolio management strategies for treaty and facultative business. The role consists of two major areas of responsibility. The first is to conduct risk assessments and to develop and update risk assessment methodologies and tools to support the underwriting of portfolios or individual risks (typically large industrial companies) in the Energy/ Chemical industry. In this aspect of the role, the Risk Engineer translates technical and scientific circumstances into a reinsurance-related framework to support underwriting decision-making and portfolio steering. The second is to support the execution of the Casualty Reinsurance Strategy through internal and external positioning and thought leadership. This includes knowledge transfer to underwriting staff, support in client contacts and negotiations, delivering presentations at client or industry events, conducting workshops and seminars, and producing external technical reports and publications.

Technical skills and industry experience in Energy/ Chemical segments is required. Given your Zurich location, the role focus is estimated to have more emphasis on the European Market, but your responsibilities will span the globe for the assigned disciplines.
- Position Swiss Re to best capture long term Casualty profit potential and contribute to the efforts to establish/maintain Swiss Re as the market and thought leader in Casualty Reinsurance.
- Provide high-quality and responsive risk analysis and decisions with a mind-set to drive innovation for tailored client/market segment solutions.
- Conduct individual deal and portfolio risk assessments for the Energy/ Chemical segments.
- Support the Client facing colleagues in identifying and developing new business opportunities and help drive growth initiatives.

Daily activities will include:
- Analysing exposures and completing risk assessments
- Developing risk assessment methodologies and tools
- Contributing to underwriting policy development
- Support portfolio monitoring, steering and reporting
- Contribute to product development
- Lead knowledge transfer initiatives
- Act as a leader or key contributor to both Hub/ Centre and Group projects related to the Energy and Chemical segments, other projects/ segments may be in scope as agreed
- Identify and monitor industry and Casualty underwriting trends and legislative and regulatory developments related to these segments
- Provide support to Client events
- Lead and participate in workshops for Casualty Facultative Underwriters

Representation Activities:
- Represent Swiss Re with senior level contacts in collaboration with Client Markets.
- Represent Swiss Re at industry events and conferences including participation and or speaking engagements.

Interaction with other parties:
- Partner with Swiss Re staff in Client Markets, Business Management, Group UW, Finance, Risk Management, and Operations to achieve objectives.

Personality requirements and skills

Education:
University degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, energy technology/science, environmental engineering/science or related discipline with knowhow in chemistry, energy technology, power utilities and general manufacturing or related discipline.
Advanced degrees or other post-graduate work is desirable.

Experience:
Professional experience in the respective industry, specific experience in risk analysis/management, project, quality or safety management and/ or insurance experience is preferred.
Experience in an international business environment dealing with clients of interdisciplinary orientation preferred.

Other:
- Business fluency (written and verbal) in English is required, additional languages (German, French, Spanish, and Italian) are an advantage.
- Open to working in an international environment and motivated to learn and further develop existing skills.
- Knowledge of the broader EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) marketplace, including the legal and regulatory frameworks impacting our business is preferred.
- Organizational and project leadership skills, and training/ presenting ability.
