Job description, responsibilities and duties
The IT System Administrator is responsible for management of enterprise Unix/Linux systems. This person will work closely with IT Applications and Operations staff to manage projects, execute system changes and resolve problems. Responsibilities include configuring, troubleshooting and maintaining UNIX servers and workstations used for product design as well as additional infrastructure support for data storage, networking, backup and recovery. The distributed environment includes Network Appliance, EMC, Netbackup, Solaris, RedHat, Windows, NIS and VMWare. Must be familiar with operational disciplines such as project management, problem management, change management, network/server monitoring, system monitoring and server backups/restores. Proposes and implements system enhancements (software and hardware updates) that will improve the performance and reliability of the systems. The candidate must also demonstrate the ability to learn new technologies quickly and be able to transfer knowledge to others.
Responsibilities:
• Install and configure Unix (Sun Solaris and Linux) hardware, operating system and utility software.
• Maintain a set of standard system images.
• Review and install necessary patches as needed to maintain system availability and security.
• Configure storage (file system, local disk, NAS, SAN, backup).
• Maintain and monitor Unix and Windows backup systems.
• Manage Unix system security through regular assessment and action programs (configuration changes, patch management.
• Respond to Unix system problems and manage problem resolution through internal and external service providers. Following resolution, analyze problem cause(s) and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Automate regular control tasks where feasible.
• Develop project plans and requirements, manage project tasks, provide status reports, and act as a technical resource to the project following the IT project process framework (PMO).
• Develop documentation in support of regular operations (operating procedures).
