Information about the position

Job description, responsibilities and duties

The European Central Bank (ECB) is seeking to appoint a Lawyer-Linguist with Slovak as his/her main language to work in its Legislation Division, which is part of the Directorate General Legal Services.

The Legislation Division is responsible for preparing the ECB’s legal acts in the official EU languages, for drafting legal documents and reviewing legal texts for legal, linguistic and terminological consistency, and for maintaining a legal terminology database. Furthermore, the Division is responsible for publishing and disseminating the ECB’s legal framework and other legal publications.

The successful candidate will be part of a team of lawyer-linguists and will be primarily responsible for translating ECB legal acts and other legal texts from English into Slovak and for revising translations of such texts provided by external suppliers. The documents relate to both central banking and banking supervision.

The successful applicant will be entrusted with the following main tasks:

- translating draft ECB legal acts and other legal documents from English into Slovak;
- translating documents related to court proceedings from English into Slovak;
- revising Slovak translations of ECB legal acts and other legal documents;
- translating legal texts from Slovak into English for internal working purposes, and revising translations from Slovak into English of national laws, documents related to court proceedings and other legal documents;
- contributing to the drafting of ECB legal acts and to the coordination of the work of the team of lawyer-linguists on multilingual translation projects;
- liaising with counterparts in the ECB, Národná banka Slovenska and other relevant European and national institutions;
- cooperating with freelance lawyer-linguists, which involves establishing and maintaining contacts, training and information sharing;
- contributing, as required, to the general legal work of the ECB

Three-year fixed-term contract, with possible conversion to a contract of indefinite duration subject to individual performance and organisational needs.

To enable the Division to maintain its business continuity capability, the successful applicant will occasionally be expected to work during non-standard working hours and to work at the ECB’s standby sites.

Personality requirements and skills

Qualifications and experience :

- Applicants must have the following knowledge and competencies:
- a mastery-level command of Slovak, which should be the applicant’s main language, and a mastery-level command of English;
- either (a) a master’s degree in law obtained at a Slovak university (magister práv), or (b) a bachelor’s degree in law obtained at a Slovak university (bakalár práv) and four years of proven professional experience in the legal field;
- in addition, either (a) a bachelor’s degree or higher in translation studies, or (b) at least two years of proven professional experience in translating legal, financial or economic texts from English into Slovak, or both;
- ideally, proven professional experience in translating legal, financial or economic texts from Slovak into English;
- ideally, proven professional experience in drafting and/or translating legislation;
- ideally, proven professional experience as a (freelance) lawyer-linguist, preferably with an EU institution;
- ideally, a good knowledge of (a) EU law; and (b) financial law;
- ideally, knowledge of, or professional experience in working with translation memory software, such as SDL Trados Studio, and/or a terminology management package, such as SDL Trados MultiTerm;
- ideally, an intermediate knowledge of at least one other official language of the EU;
- a working knowledge of MS Office, in particular Word, Excel and Outlook;
- ideally, user knowledge of document management systems such as OpenText Livelink.
