Job description, responsibilities and duties

International school with fully equipped modern laboratories (chemistry, biology, physics) is looking for a skillful and experienced Laboratory Technician.

Duties and requirements will include:
1. Prepare laboratory equipment and resources for practical work, as requested by teachers and ensure its delivery to the correct laboratory at the correct time, as well as its removal and re-storage.
2. Ensure that chemicals are stored correctly and safely before and after use.
3. Ensure that laboratory equipment is cleaned after use and returned to the agreed storage area.
4. Ensure that gas and electricity supplies are isolated at the end of each working day.
5. Carry out periodic basic maintenance checks on the gas supply in the laboratories.
6. Carry out periodic basic safety check of the fume cupboard, prior to it being used, as notified by teachers.
7. Maintain a computerised inventory and ensure that it is kept up to date, taking into account quantities, expiry dates etc. Use this to inform interested parties of the need for purchases and safe removal of such chemicals.
8. Advise teaching staff on safety issues in their choice of materials for practical work, especially as required by local H and S law.
9. Prepare and submit an annual purchase requisition for equipment and resources that cover general science within the department.
10. Submit purchase requisitions for the experimental needs of the teachers, in terms of small items for experiments.
11. Keep up to date with local H and S requirements and to ensure that they are passed onto the Head of Science and the teachers in the department as needed.
12. Work closely with and report to the Head of Science as immediate line manager.
